1. Introduction
The Universiti Malaya Chinese Orchestra (UMCO) was established in 1981 and is a subordinate of the Universiti Malaya Chinese Society. During the early stage of the orchestra’s establishment, UMCO confronted problems such as not having a music room to carry out regular practices, insufficient musical instruments, and fewer members joining the club. Over the years, club members have actively organized fundraising events such as performing on different occasions at universities and organizing annual concerts to raise funds for the purchase of musical instruments. Fortunately, there was a group of members with high sincerity.
2. Justification of the Event
UMCO concert, as the most significant event of UMCO, aims to promote Chinese traditional music and showcase members’ achievements throughout the year. The first concert was held in 1997, followed by the second concert in 2001. Both concerts gained tremendous support and feedback from the public. The 40th-anniversary concert was initially planned to be held in 2020.
However, the concert was forced to halt due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. After three years, the orchestra finally gets the opportunity to conduct its 40th-anniversary concert in 2023. It is the first concert after the pandemic, commemorating UMCO’s formation of forty years. All the members prepared themselves and looked forward to this concert with the audience's participation to enlighten the concert.
3. Goals and Objectives
The event's goals and objectives are as follows:
I. To promote and enhance appreciation of Chinese traditional music.
● Chinese traditional music has a long history and can be traced back long ago, representing the Chinese community. Traditional culture started to vanish as youngsters nowadays do not appreciate their own culture. Along with the development of the era, many efforts are needed to improve the public's consciousness towards it.
II. To develop a better understanding of Chinese music culture in society.
● A greater appreciation of Chinese music culture enables people to acquaint themselves with the Chinese community. People will have deeper knowledge about Chinese orchestras and know the importance of appreciating their own traditional culture and music.
III. To raise funds for Chinese traditional musical instrument purchases.
● The raising of funds assures the smooth growth of the orchestra in many aspects, most importantly the musical instruments. Musical instruments available now were passed on year after year by the ex-seniors, therefore the
condition of the instruments was mostly worn out and some were in bad condition. The members wished to repair and buy new instruments to recruit more members without considering the lack of musical instruments.
