About the Show
Nunsense is a satirical comedy about putting on a show-and you, the audience, are part of that show from beginning to end. The story begins with a culinary catastrophe: Sister Julia (Child of God) accidentally poisons 52 nuns with her vichyssoise soup. Forty-eight have already been laid to rest, but four remain in the convent freezer, awaiting proper burial. With no money left in the coffers, the remaining Little Sisters of Batu must raise funds for the final funerals. Their solution? Stage a variety show in the school hall—and they’ve invited us to join them in answering their prayers.
The cast features a delightful and quirky group of characters: a former circus performer who thrives in the spotlight, her competitive rival, a street-smart nun from Brighton, a novice who dreams of becoming the world’s first ballerina nun, and a sweet but scatterbrained sister who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head among others! In our production, these characters are all portrayed by International School educators (from Uplands, SCIPS,
Stonyhurst) bringing both heart and humor to the stage.
Our Mission
Through this production of Nunsense, we aim to cultivate a love for theatre within the Penang community by delivering high-quality, entertaining, and accessible performances. We believe in the power of theatre to create shared cultural experiences, support local talent, and encourage
deeper community engagement with the arts.
In addition, this show offers a valuable well-being opportunity for educators—providing a creative, collaborative, and rejuvenating outlet beyond the classroom. Please let us know if you are an educator who is interested in joining the fun for our next production!
The Educator’s Ensemble is a newly formed teacher’s theatre group that aims to shine a light on the talents of our educators and staff. We seek to produce Dan Goggin's beloved musical Nunsense, a comedic masterpiece that has charmed audiences worldwide. We are hoping this production will bring joy to the Penang community, promote the arts, and provide an opportunity for teacher well-being among international school educators on the island.

Producer and Artistic Director-Cindy Kennaugh has directed hundreds of shows throughout her career as an International School educator. Nunsense has been her “go-to” play for witty, sometimes cringy but farcical fun entertainment. Having directed four other productions in the US, South America and Europe with students and Adults we are excited to finally produce it in SE Asia.
