Back after a successful run last year!

So you have a play (or plays) you're dying to direct.

Where do you start?
What constitutes a directorial vision?
How do directors prep for auditions, casting and rehearsals?
How do directors run rehearsals -- and subsequently tech -- effectively?
How do directors collaborate with other artists?
What are problems directors often encounter?
How do directors continue to sharpen their craft on their own?

This three-week lab introduces and explores tools for the intermediate director. Subjects covered are text analysis, dramaturgy, theatre theory, design, audition, casting, composition, scene study and directing specifically for the Malaysian stage. The lab combines 48 hours of intensive training with 8 hours of supervised rehearsals where student directors direct seasoned Malaysian actors. Student directors also serve as assistant directors to their peers for another 8 hours. The lab culminates in a one-night-only showcase for the public.

This directing lab is specific to Stanislavskian/Chekhovian realism with focus on truthful human relationships. Avant-garde, postmodern and experimental directing approaches are discussed briefly, but are not part of the training.

Student directors must have previous experience in directing and/or acting.

The lab admits only 8 student directors who are selected based on application and experience. Ages 21+.

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac)
In 1995, two individuals created history by building the first privately owned and operated theatre in Malaysia below Dataran Merdeka. The individuals were none other than Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham. The said theatre was the The Actors Studio@Plaza Putra. Then in 2003, flash floods inundated KL and destroyed The Actors Studio’s underground complex entirely. It was out of this tragedy that the The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) was born.
