Welcome to the first edition of SLAMOKRASI, a Kuala Lumpur poetry slam event with playing cards, picket signs and legit crowns.

THE SLAMMERS:


ISAAC SE HOO is an engineering student who doesn't actually want to be an engineer, he's just doing it out of interest just like his interest in poetry; Isaac doesn't actually know what he wants.


DHABITAH ZAINAL is a writer and poet who is very much fascinated with the human mind and behaviour, but ironically prefers the company of cats.


ENBAH NILAH is a literature major who would sooner write a dissertation than one witty line of introduction.


MUHAMMAD ZHAFIR puts the poetry in RAP.


KIERAN MATHERS is an educator, creator and poet, who lives and works in Malaysia. He loves writing personal, political poetry and when people give him free ice-cream.


KIMBERLY S'NG is a Budak Subang Jaya who says "didn't get my passport stamped when I got here tho"


JACK MALIK is from Projek Rabak who digs any poetry scene and open mic nights.


SARA RAIN is a poet who's not very good in one liner because secretly she's a cat who can't decide on things


AZIZAN AFI' is the most cynical idealist, the most idealistic cynic and the classiest hobo you'll ever meet.


ARIFF NAQIUDDIN thinks making puns is a form of poetry itself. Because even a single chuckle is better than shedding a lonely tear.


THE DECIDERS: 


BERNICE CHAULY is a Malaysian writer, poet, educator, founder and director of the KL Writers Workshop as well as the Festival Director of the George Town Literary Festival in Penang. She is the author of five books of poetry and prose; going there and coming back (1997), The Book of Sins (2008), Lost in KL (2008), the acclaimed literary memoir Growing Up With Ghosts (2011) which won in the Reader’s Choice Awards 2012 in the Non-Fiction Category, and her third collection of poems, Onkalo (2013).


STEPHANIE CHAN (SG) has won national poetry slams in Singapore and the UK and been invited to perform her work in 11 countries. She currently organizes and hosts storytelling and spoken word events in Singapore. 


JAMES GOH is a 13 year old who enjoys expressing himself, whether it's through videogames, or books, or poetry with his homeschooling friends, Team Demigods. 


AZ'FARR BAGINDA is a theatre practitioner who has indulged himself in the roles of an actor, director, producer, stage-manager and an arts educator. He has worked with The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), The Actors Studio, Masakini Theatre Company, The Oral Stage, The Electric Minds Projects and The Brown Boy Theatre. If he isn’t found on or anywhere near the stage, he can be found as an Executive Director (Head Honcho) of Blubricks, an academy that offers performing arts related courses for both children and adults. 


In support of Refugee Day, this installment will FEATURE voices of the refugee community, namely. 


ZULFADLI KAWOM is the Chairman of the Literary Hall Samudra Pasai, Lhokseumawe a published poet and a powerful voice from Krueng Mane, Aceh Utara.
