Founded in 2000, the Dewangga Sakti (“magical tapestry”) ensemble attempts to bring age-old ethnic Malay music to contemporary audiences. The group revives traditional song forms such as zapin, inang, asli, and joget that form the foundation of Malaysia’s folk musical tradition.
Dewangga Sakti’s music is characterized by a strong passion for traditional rhythm and melodic forms, while imbuing it with creative ornamentation and a new vigor. Their debut album, Mabok Kepayang (Lovesick) was released in 2008 and their next album Arus Deras is scheduled for release in 2016. They have performed extensively in Malaysia and have travelled to perform in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, China and Russia.
They collaborated with US classical quartet Apple Hill in 2011 and collaborated with Ron Bumblefoot Thal (lead guitar of Guns n Roses) during his ‘Appetite for Durian’ solo tour in Malaysia in November 2013. The group comprises Edie Nazrin (vocals), Zulkifli Ramli (gambus/oud), Norman Soo (violin), Abdul Raof (percussion), Wahyun Anwar (percussion), Irwan Effendy (accordion) and Azman Azahar (bass guitar).
