The MPO pays tribute to William Shakespeare in 2016, the 400th anniversary of his death, in a programme of music inspired by four of the bard’s great plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which generated Mendelssohn’s famous Wedding March; Henry V, for which William Walton wrote a memorable filmscore; The Merry Wives of Windsor, which brought forth a sparkling overture from Otto Nicolai; and Romeo and Juliet, which has inspired more music than any other play.
