Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan recently pledged USD3 billion for disease prevention. Disorders of the nervous system are an increasing burden on the world's health system. This includes age-related diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, psychiatric disorders such as autism, depression and schizophrenia.
Neuroscientists all over the world study the development, anatomy and physiology of the human brain to help us understand these diseases and develop better strategies for treatment and cure. Understanding how the brain develops in an embryo allows neuroscientist to use the same genetic programme in stem cells to generate specific brain cells or tissue for replacement therapies.
