Details

Philosophy as a Way of Life: Education in Schools will be organized at Gerakbudaya, Petaling Jaya on 22nd October 2016 (Saturday).

* For more information, please visit this website https://www.facebook.com/events/1422512727766546/

Synopsis of Discussion:

At its most fundamental, philosophy is the love of knowledge. It is rather unfortunate that such an important subject (encompassing Ethics, Existentialism, Metaphysics, Phenomenology, etc.) is often thought of as being redundant; even rendered null and void in some circles.

Our panelists will discuss if philosophy should be taught in Malaysian schools so as to develop students (and citizens) who are more cognizant of the world around them, and not merely wealth generating automatons devoid of critical thinking.

As Plato suggests in symbolic terms, we ought to move away from the illusory shadows and tread slowly towards its tangible source; the sun (knowledge in its purest form).

Speakers:

Arief S. Arman graduated from the University of Queensland with a BA in Philosophy & Political Science. He has authored several academic essays in the field of philosophy (e.g. 'Albert Camus, The Absurd, and Martyrdom') and is currently studying French before pursuing a Masters degree.

Nazira Roslee is on her third year of teaching English at SK Putrajaya Presint 9(1). She is a graduate from IPG Kampus Pulau Pinang - Universiti Utara Malaysia for B. Ed Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) 2012. She is an active member of Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia and also advocates in empowering girls to be leaders and learner's autonomy.
