Social Entrepreneurship Malaysia 2017 (SEM 2017) is redefining the entrepreneurship learning landscape in Malaysia. With a vision to encourage socially responsible companies in Malaysia, SEM 2017 is on a mission to cultivate mindsets to do just that. This workshop aims to encourage those in the business to align their visions and build the right foundation for a successful, scalable business with the right core values.



SEM 2017 is conducted as a workshop with the purpose in mind to help SMEs rethink what social responsibility and entrepreneurship really means on the practical level. Through engaging activities and discourse, this workshop can help shape the perception that being a socially responsible business is more than just organising corporate social responsibility events – it all starts from within. Industry shakers who have made a mark in their very own businesses and industries are invited to be part of this exciting workshop to interact with participants. They will be working closely with participants in building an effective action plan to transform businesses into sustainable, successful ones. This year, we are honoured to have the participation of Dato’ Sri Idris Jala of PEMANDU, Dato’ Michael Tio of PKT Logistics Group, Ruben Gnanalingam of Westports Malaysia, Dato’ CC Ngei of Feruni Group and Mr. Chris Tan of Chur Associates as speakers for SEM 2017.

Dato’ Sri Idris Jala

Dato’ Sri Idris Jala is no doubt a prominent figure in the world of policy making. With Bloomberg declaring him to the one of the Top 10 most influential policy makers in the world, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala is a transformation guru to be reckoned with. He has helped countless organisations in Malaysia and around the world to turn around even at the most difficult of scenarios with his courageous personality, big fast results methodology and transformational secrets that are innovative, rigor and relevant to today’s demands.

Appointed by the government, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala helms the role as Chief Executive Officer that Malaysia’s most innovative governmental agencies PEMANDU where he and his team helps governments around the world to spearhead their very own transformation journey. He also is part of an advisory panel for the World Economic Forum on New Economic Growth and also on the Advisory Panel of World Bank.  Prior to his government stint, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala was Managing Director/CEO at Malaysia Airlines (MAS) for three years. He was brought on board to turn around the airline which was in crisis brought about by a prolonged bout of losses from operational inefficiencies. Before MAS, he spent 23 years at Shell, rising up the ranks to hold senior positions including Vice-President, Shell Retail International and Vice-President Business Development Consultancy, based in the UK.

His contribution to society has seen him receive honorific titles from the King of Malaysia and various state governments of Malaysia. He was also conferred the “First Order” medal by the Italian government.

Ruben Emir Gnanalingam Bin Abdullah 

Ruben Emir Gnanalingam helms the role of Chief Executive Officer at Westports Holdings Berhad since January 15 2009. He began as a clerk and traffic controller in his early career days before starting a dotcom incubator. He returned to work in Westport after cashing out of his own business in 2005. Ruben is known to be an upcoming young entrepreneur who is ambitious and relies on facts and figures before making decisions.

A graduate of London School of Economics and Harvard Business School’s leadership and executive development programs, Ruben has been involved in various businesses and industry-related groups such as being the Vice-President of the Malaysia Basketball Association, Board Member of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club Malaysia and a member of the National Science Council. He is also the co-chairman of Queens Park Rangers Football Club, a partnership forged with Airasia’s Tony Fernandez. He is the Founder and Co-Owner of the KL Dragons (ABL) and also the Los Angeles Football Club (MLS).

Dato’ Michael Tio

With an innate sense of entrepreneurship, Dato’ Michael Tio knew that he is born to be in the business world. He has learnt many great lessons from his father Dato’ Tio Sook Keo who founded Port Klang Trading (renamed PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd) back in 1974. He began trading while he was a student in England and profit from a tremendously successful luxury pre-owned vehicles export business and returned to Malaysia to join the family business.

Dato’ Michael Tio took the leading role with a vision to make PKT Logistics the leading logistics player in Malaysia. He ensures that PKT Logistics provides unparalleled customized integrated total logistic solutions in the ASEAN region. With the philosophy of “Dream of it, Talk about it, Plan for it, Work on it and Get it”, the award winning PKT logistics today is known as the leader in the automotive logistics in Malaysia with a customer base of over 10 car brands in addition to providing solutions for E-Commerce, Fast Moving Consumer Goods as well as Food & Beverage industries.

With a personality that attracts, Dato’ Michael Tio is quite a prominent online figure with over 800,000 Facebook followers. His immense contribution towards the community saw him appointed as an Adjunct Professor by both University Utara Malaysia and University Technology Mara. He is a firm believer of doing business with values and his philosophy towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has made PKT’s CSR initiatives stand out among the rest.

Dato’ C. C. Ngei

 Dato’ C. C. Ngei is a man with vision and a mind for innovation. As the founder and managing director of the renown Feruni Ceramiche Sdn Bhd, he has transformed the tiling industry to what it is today, and propelled the business to another level by introducing cutting-edge solutions.

He was introduced to the world of tiling when he helped his father in his tiling distribution business. His vast experience in the trade has helped him see that there was hardly any innovation in the business, and the trade was labelled a ‘sunset’ one. Dato’ C. C. Ngei refused to conform to the traditional business model and he began to seek ways to change the way things work and the perception among the younger generation. With determination and s strong vision in mind, today Dato’ CC has made Feruni to be acknowledged as the industry leader for premium ceramic tiles, delivering the world’s latest tile trends together with a world class shopping experience at multiple Feruni Retail Stores in major cities across Malaysia.

Dato’ CC’s accolades include the SME Man of the Year Award at The Brand Laureate SMEs Best Brands Awards 2014 and Entrepreneur of the Year Award at The Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2015. He is also man that believes in giving back to society and dedicates his time to philanthropic efforts.


Chris Tan

Chris Tan is no stranger in the property and entrepreneurship scene. He founded Chur Associates® in 2003, a boutique legal service provide that delivers friendly solutions for clients from Corporate Advisory in “Legal Department Outsourcing” to “Everything Real Estate” serving the entire value chain.

Chris Tan is a lawyer of many hats. He is also an author, entrepreneur, media columnist, radio DJ and a life coach. He is a regular guest speaker for corporate, academic and public events both in Malaysia and international scene. He regularly contributes articles for both local and overseas publications in all languages especially on the topic of real estate. On top of that, he has authored 10 books to date covering law, property investment, estate planning, tax and entrepreneurship.

As an innovative lawyer that helped many in real estate, he was one of the youngest persons to be the recipient of the FIABCI (International Real Estate Federation) Medal of Honour. In FIABCI itself, Chris plays the role as an advisor to FIABCI on constitutional and policy matters particularly on setting up the FIABCI Asia Pacific Regional Secretariat that has impacted the FIABCI structure today. In addition to his service as an evaluator of the Malaysia Property Award, Christ is elected to serve the Malaysian Chapter for two terms from 2006 to 2010 as its National Council Member. He is then appointed to the Board of Directors of FIABCI International to preside over the portfolio of young members age 35 and below for the term 2009-2010.

Chris Tan was awarded the Prestige “Top 40 under 40” Outstanding Young Malaysian Award for his entrepreneurship, “The 100 Most Influential Young Entrepreneurs” by Entrepreneur Insight and “Young Entrepreneur Award” by the Malaysian Australian Alumni Awards in year 2016.
